Several years after the first Cats and Dogs hit the screens, we are being treated to a sequel (in 3D) but this comic take on inter-species animosity is really not as much a cup of joy.
The film’s intention to pay spoofy homage to James Bond and other action genre flicks does it in. The ensuing fur-go-round is just not cute enough.
Kitty Galore, former agent for MEOWS, has gone rogue and hatched a diabolical plan tobring her canine enemies to heel. Faced with this unprecedented threat, cats and dogs are forced to join forces in an unlikely alliance to save themselves and their humans. The credits are laid out in 007 style with Shirley Bassey’s voice plying a rejigged version of ‘Get the party started.’
History is replete with epic rivalries. North VS South, Ali VS Fraser… John Goodman VS Pizza. Cats and Dogs is the story of one such epic rivalry and a concept that can’t miss with the kids.
Following closely in the vein of Robert Rodriguez recent release “Spy Kids” Cats and Dogs tells the tale of the struggle of dog kind to protect mankind from the evil machinations of cats… and in this case one cat in particular… Mr. Tinkles.
Unlike Spy Kids however, Cats and Dogs attempts to put more of a humorous spin on the spy biz, featuring a Doctor Evil like cat mastermind pitted against slobbering, barking, secret agents. Sadly, C&D lacks consistency and eventually, like so many other modern films, becomes so enamored with special effects that it ends up sacrificing jokes for cool CGI.
But, in evil overlord Mr. Tinkles at least, Cats and Dogs purrs. Combining all the sadistic and evil pontificating of Khan Noonian Sing with the fear inspiring looks of a well bred Persian, Mr. Tinkles manages to bring some much needed funny bone to a film wandering around in a maze of shiny special effects. Is it enough? Perhaps, for those Mr. Tinkles moments are plentiful, even if one is forced to wade through a gallon or two of cute little ninja puppies and dog driven bullet cars.
Dogs may win the war, but it’s the cats that save the film.
The mood is well set and director Brad Peyton makes his furry Bond aspirations clear right from the word go. Ron J Friedman and Steve Bencich’s script appears to be a rehashed version of the original and their attempts to churn out humorous set-pieces aimed at an older demographic falls flat. The spy and action intrigue is just not exciting enough. The violence is toonish, the dialogues, save for Bette Midler’s over-the-top impersonation of Kitty Galore, is quite mediocre and the F/x though better than the prequel, is not strong enough to make it memorable. The jokes are also not funny enough. This is a movie that could be a strain even for the kids the franchise was originallyaimed at!
